Continuing our theme of sports, we talk about the recent controversy at the US Open with Serena Williams and umpire Carlos Ramos. We discuss the event and break down the response. We talk about the gendered and racial components of how the event was being portrayed, the dynamics within sports that privileges men’s passion and penalizes women’s emotions and the connections to the nerd communities response to women. We especially talk about the openly racist caricature by Mark Knight. This leads us to talk about something closer to home as our alma mater, our old high school, Aliso Niguel was rocked by a racist controversy. Supporters of the high school football team used Trump rhetoric to verbally intimidate the predominantly Hispanic/Latinx high school they were playing. We talk about the response by Aliso Niguel’s principal, our own experiences at that high school, and the relationship between sports and militant nationalism.
